Watching them in succession like this lets you see how Japanese cinema itself developed throughout click s, emerging from its classical Golden Age to its dark, surrealistic New Wave.

Not having seen the original series I don't know how similar or not Beat Takeshis version is but as a standalone movie it is quite fun to watch, albeit very similiar to many other movies.

Lot's of violence and a kick ass score that I at first found just odd. The cgi blood might put some people off but I thought it was stylish enough.

Someday I'll have a Zatoichi marathon. I promise. Kitano does a marvelous job at playing the titular renegade.

While Katsu was kinda bumbling and friendly, Kitano feels colder, more stoic. It does everything a Zatoichi film, does but now more compact, more lean.

It gets to the good parts and doesn't wander about like a few of the entries from the original run. It knows we're here to see Chanbara and gets to it straight away.

Also, the gimmick in which the story is shared with several side characters was never a favorite story cliche I liked from the past, however it here they are incorporated so well, it actually helps the story instead of being useless filler.

Beat Kitano's winningly deadpan take on the classic ronin character. Here, Zatoichi gets tangled up with a gang of local thugs and a wandering geisha duo on their own quest for revenge and who have secrets of their own, of course.

The humor here is sly and subtle, and Kitano plays fast and loose with genre conventions here: it's not just a samurai revenge thriller, it's also a dryly funny comedy and occasionally a musical too.

Come for the hyperbolically gruesome sword fights, and stay for the jokes and dance sequences. The action is fast and not fully seen in the first half of Zatoichi but the final act provides lots of more detailed action and the titular character's killing sprees are wonderful action set pieces.

The film is actually quite light overall and is often comedic which contrasts the strong violence. Review by Thibault Fatton.

Would've made an exceptional animated film cuz the action sequences would've benefited a lot from it. Il remake kitaniano pare quasi una sfida indiretta al "Kill Bill vol.

Review by Max C. This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth. Three and a half stars for an interesting and entertaining samurai film, four for a samurai film that ends with a bonkers dance sequence.

It was merely okay for the most part I really didn't care for the CGI blood and effects , but it had its humorous moments, and the film really picks up towards the end.

And the very end, just before the credits roll? Just sublime. Kind of like his movie Sonatine and others , Kitano really knows how to make truly unique endings that really stick in the viewers' minds afterwards Great action sequences and mixing in the usual Takeshi Kitano comedy in some scenes.

Samurai movies are my forte lol. His playing with rhythm in the world is fun and the action is satisfying even with the weird CGI sword blades.

Just a list of Asian films I've watched so far. My next major movie goal is to work through the Criterion Collection list. Took me a year to work through….

While wandering, Zatoichi discovers a remote mountain village at the mercy of Ginzo, a ruthless gang-leader. Ginzo disposes of anyone who gets in his way, especially after hiring the mighty samurai ronin, Hattori, as a bodyguard.

After a raucous night of gambling in town, Zatoichi encounters a pair of geishas--as dangerous as they are beautiful--who've come to avenge their parents' murder.

As the paths of these and other colorful characters intertwine, Ginzo's henchmen are soon after Zatoichi. With his legendary cane sword at his side, the stage is set for a riveting showdown.

Takeshi Kitano Kan Shimosawa. Takeshi Kitano Yoshinori Ota. Katsumi Yanagijima. Thankfully, much like the man playing the blind swordsman, it has aged very well.

Takeshi Kitano is a writer-director-actor that works in familiar and popular genres but his best films always manage to subvert convention and expectation.

Kitano takes the familiar character of Zatoichi and moulds him into something new and, in much the same way, he takes a routine story and enriches it by creating complicated characters who are not all they seem.

Kitano trades his usual static deadpan for faster cuts and a moving camera, absolutely none of which his legendary protagonist -- who is totally in on the joke -- can see.

I'm not sure how to describe this film other than to say for the most part you think you are watching a typical samurai movie with a few light characters and scenes for comic relief, but by the end of it you are grinning like a baby because the final scene is so unexpected and fun and, well, it just makes you bloody happy!

I must confess that halfway through I couldn't figure it out--there seemed to be two honourable samurai and it looked like they might end up facing each other.

I've only seen 3 or 4 samurai films, but in those there has never been a fight between two honourable samurai.

I couldn't wait to see how this…. This was a very strange beast. I think this was much more about the different ways we experience the world than anything else, the sound design, the editing; it covers memory, blindness, trauma, and the script covers gender, in such interesting ways.

In the end it seems to come out on the side of acceptance, which is nice. It was an interesting way to handle a familiar type of story and the version of that story it tells was itself interesting.

Kitano seems to be a master of the form, this being the first film he's directed that I've seen. I just have one quibble.

Not having seen the original series I don't know how similar or not Beat Takeshis version is but as a standalone movie it is quite fun to watch, albeit very similiar to many other movies.
